On Thursday, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad’s son Asad and his accomplice Ghulam were killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police in Jhansi. The incident has brought to light a video of state chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent statement in the state assembly, where he vowed to crush the mafia and bury them in the soil.

In the video, Adityanath can be heard saying, “Iss House mein keh raha hoon. Iss mafia ko mitti me mila denge… Jitney mafia hain unko mitti me milane ka kaam karenge (I am stating this in the House. The mafia will be destroyed. All mafia will be destroyed).” This statement has gained traction on social media in the aftermath of the encounter.

Asad Ahmed and Ghulam, who were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case and carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh each, were killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UPSTF) team led by Dy SP Navendu and Dy SP Vimal.

In a previous statement, Adityanath had asserted that the mafia now had no space for illegal activities. He compared his government’s actions with those of previous governments when goons and mafia used to openly threaten businessmen and kidnap people.
